Mid gold in colour with a green hue. Lifted white peach and melon characters on the nose which are underpinned by creamy, cashew nut aromas. The palate displays tight yet intense nectarine and melon flavours balanced by some subtle creaminess. This is a refined but powerful wine with excellent intensity. The finish is long and lingering. This wine reflects one of the lowest cropping and coolest years on record, making it a tight and well structured, elegant Chardonnay. With our vineyards now being fully mature the influence of vine age and subsequent quality this delivers is now fully impacting on this Scotchmans Hill wine.

| O Winnicy | "Scotchmans Hill was established in 1982 by current owners, David and Vivienne Browne, in one of the most beautiful landform settings in Australia, the Bellarine Peninsula. The Bellarine Peninsula is named after its original local aboriginal tribe Balla Wein. Scotchmans Hill is located on Mount Bellarine which was named by the Scottish immigrants who settled the Mount Bellarine area in the 1840s. Mount Bellarine was formed over 30 million years ago by tectonic movement which formed Port Phillip Bay and the surrounding volcanic region of Geelong and Mount Bellarine. The Geelong regions role in the development of the Australian wine industry began in 1842 when the first planting of vines was undertaken in the surrounding Barrabool Hills. Grown and managed mainly by Swiss immigrants, these vineyards were used to produce wine to be sold through the frequently held auctions in the city. The area flourished under the experienced management and by 1869 there were over 400 hectares planted. Many notable Swiss vine growers visiting added superior knowledge and quality to the wines. Today there remains 250 vine growing hectares in the Geelong region. The Browne family have a history in the region when George and Rita Browne would visit their holiday destination in Portarlington taking their children with them. Their son, David Browne, became very familiar with the region and when given the chance to own property on Mount Bellarine in 1975 he and wife Vivienne bought Scotchmans Hill, a derelict dairy farm. In 1982 vines were planted at Scotchmans Hill, becoming the second vineyard in the region and the first winery in the region. Scotchmans Hill is family owned and operated, involving two other members of the Browne family: Matthew Browne, General Manager and Andrew Browne, Export Manager. Since the first vintage in 1986 the winery has expanded sales throughout Australia and into ten export countries. The business is still family owned and run and constitutes 40% of the Geelong regions total bottled wine production. " |
