Peach and pineapple aromas flow through to the palate, with fragrant honey flavours. The wine has crisp acidity, balancing with the aromatic sweetness and providing a clean, yet full finish. This is the third vintage of this wine that we have produced and I feel that it benefits greatly from some time in the bottle.

| O Winnicy | "The first European settlers arrived at the Cape of Good Hope in 1652 to set up a harbor and garden for the Dutch East Indian Company, whose ships passed around the Cape on the way to the Spice Colonies in the East. Retired employees of the company who were issued grants of land by the governor settled the Cape colony. In 1693, Simon van der Stel, the second governor of the Cape of Good Hope, allocated the original land at Fairview to Steven Vervey, who was almost certainly a French Huguenot. Archival records show that the first wine was made on Fairview in 1699. The farm passed through numerous owners until 1937 when Charles Back, an immigrant from Lithuania, bought Fairview. The farm already had a reputation for its wines, which in those days were mostly fortified styles. Local anecdote even refers to a doctor prescribing teaspoonfuls of Fairview wines to ailing children.Charles Back passed away in 1955 and the running of the farm was then taken over by his son Cyril who replanted the whole farm. In the early days, Fairview vinified its grapes and delivered the wine to the large merchants and co-operatives that controlled the South African industry at that time. Cyril, a man ahead of the times saw the need to break free from this restrictive grip and decided to go it alone, with Fairview's first estate bottling occurring in 1974. In order to circumvent the stranglehold held by the large merchants, Fairview decided to auction its first bottled wines in 1974, which was the first wine auction in this country, pre-dating the now famous Nederburg Auctions. Cyril introduced milking goats in 1980, which led to the development of cheese production at Fairview. In 1978 his son, Charles, joined Fairview after completing a winemaking degree and a practical spell at another cellar. Charles is responsible for the building of Fairview's famous goat tower, which was completed despite the initial reservations of his father. When Cyril passed away in 1995, Charles assumed full responsibility of Fairview. The policies and initiatives started by Cyril Back continue to be evolved by Charles, ensuring that Fairview is planted with grape varieties suited to our terroir such as shiraz, viognier and pinotage. The best cheese styles from Europe enhanced by Fairview's innovation provide cheese lovers with a wonderful selection of distinctive cheeses. In 1998 Charles Back bought the farm Klein Amos Kuil, situated in Malmesbury. The farm is the home of the Spice Route wine company. Spice Route has in its few years since inception had a stratospheric climb into the top echelons of the South African wine industry. The dry land vineyards on this prime site are enormously expressive, and have encouraged Fairview to seek and source fruit from a number of special vineyard sites throughout the Western Cape." |
